This combination medication is used to treat a certain type of acne (inflammatory acne vulgaris). It helps to decrease the number of acne pimples. Clindamycin is an antibiotic that stops the growth of acne-causing bacteria. Benzoyl peroxide can also stop the growth of bacteria as well as reduce oil production in the skin, helping keep your pores open.
Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start using clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Before using this medication, wash the affected skin gently with mild, non-medicated cleanser, rinse with warm water, and pat dry. Apply a thin layer of this medication to the affected areas of the skin as directed by your doctor. Be careful to avoid your eyes, mouth, inside your nose, and any areas of broken skin. Wash your hands after each use.
Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time(s) each day.
Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase.
It may take up to 6 weeks to see a decrease in acne and up to 12 weeks to see the full benefit of the medication.
Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.
Dry skin, redness, burning, itching, or skin peeling may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
You can use skin moisturizing creams or lotions to help reduce many of the side effects listed above.
Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
This medication may be absorbed into your bloodstream and very rarely cause a severe intestinal condition due to a bacteria called C. difficile. This condition may occur during treatment or weeks to months after treatment has stopped. Tell your doctor right away if you develop:
- diarrhea that doesn't stop
- abdominal or stomach pain/cramping
- blood/mucus in your stool
If you have these symptoms, do not use anti-diarrhea or opioid products because they may make symptoms worse.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including:
- rash
- itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
- severe dizziness
- trouble breathing

This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit your time in the sun. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Tell your doctor right away if you get sunburned or have skin blisters/redness.
This medication may bleach hair or colored fabric. Avoid contact with hair or clothing.
During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
It is unknown if this form of clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide passes into breast milk. If using this medication on the breast, avoid using ointment forms of this medication. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin topical may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

It is not known whether benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin topical will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medicine.
It is not known whether benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin topical passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while using this medicine.
Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Using more medicine or applying it more often than prescribed will not make it work any faster, and may increase side effects.
Benzoyl peroxide can cause a rare but serious allergic reaction or severe skin irritation. Before you start using this medicine, you may choose to apply a "test dose" to see if you have a reaction. Apply a very small amount of the medicine to 1 or 2 small acne areas every day for 3 days in a row. If there is no reaction, begin using the full prescribed amount on the 4th day.
Wash your hands before and after applying this medicine.
Wash your face with a mild cleanser (not soap) and pat the skin dry with a clean towel.
Benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin topical is usually applied twice daily, in the morning and evening.
Avoid getting this medicine in your eyes, mouth, or nose (or in the creases of your nose), or on your lips. If it does get into any of these areas, wash with water. Do not apply this medicine to sunburned, windburned, dry, chapped, irritated, or broken skin.
It may take several weeks before your symptoms improve. Keep using the medication as directed and tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve.
If you receive more than one supply of Acanya or Duac gel, store the unopened container in a refrigerator until you are ready to start using it. Do not freeze.
Once in use, store the gel at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date on the label has passed. Duac has an expiration date of 60 days. Acanya has an expiration date of 10 weeks. BenzaClin has an expiration date of 3 months.
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.
Overdose symptoms include bloody or watery diarrhea, which may result if you absorb this medicine through your skin by applying too much.
Avoid using skin products that can cause irritation, such as harsh soaps, shampoos, or skin cleansers, hair coloring or permanent chemicals, hair removers or waxes, or skin products with alcohol, spices, astringents, or lime.
Avoid using other medications on the areas you treat with benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin topical unless your doctor tells you to.
Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, stop using benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin topical and call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
Avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds. This medication can make you sunburn more easily. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when you are outdoors.
Avoid using sunscreen containing PABA on the same skin treated with benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin topical, or skin discoloration may occur.
Benzoyl peroxide can bleach hair or fabrics. Do not let this medicine come into contact with clothing, hair, or colored towels or bed linens.
Benzoyl peroxide can cause a rare but serious allergic reaction or severe skin irritation. These reactions may occur just a few minutes after you apply the medicine, or within a day or longer afterward.
Stop using this medicine and get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives, itching; difficult breathing, feeling light-headed; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop using this medicine and call your doctor at once if you have:
- severe redness, burning, stinging, or peeling of treated skin areas; or
- diarrhea that is watery or bloody.

BENZACLIN TOPICAL GEL (CLINDAMYCIN PHOSPHATE/BENZOYL PEROXIDE)
Benzaclin Topical Gel Description
Has puberty struck and you find yourself hiding under make-up or strategic hair styles that cover parts of your face or neck because of acne? Or adult acne has erupted from a hormonal imbalance? You are not the only one, nor will you be the last to have acne.
Talk to your doctor about Benzaclin Topical Gel to solve your problem and be patient as it could take several weeks before you notice any improvements in your skin. You may even experience an outbreak as Benzaclin Topical Gel works to help bring pimples to the surface sooner than intended as it sloughs off old skin cells. Don’t pop the pimples, as this can lead to an infection or scarring.
Dual-Acting Benzaclin Topical Gel
The active ingredients of Benzaclin Topical Gel are an antibiotic called Clindamycin Phosphate, and a popular peeling agent with antibacterial tendencies called Benzoyl Peroxide. When applied to your skin as directed, the antibiotic will work to block the processes required to generate new proteins so the bacteria cannot grow or multiply.
The bacteria that causes acne cannot survive in the presence of oxygen so Benzoyl Peroxide works by adding oxygen to your skin to kill the Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) and reduce the inflammation. It also works to help unclog your pores as it removes excess oil and dead skin cells as the old layer of skin peels and sloughs off.
Conditions Treated by Benzaclin Topical Gel
P. acnes and other bacteria are normal residents of your skin and seldom cause you any grief. However, during puberty or a hormonal imbalance when your pores have an excess of oil (sebum) and dead skin cells, P. acnes has a perfect oxygen-free environment where they can flourish.
